Pierhead Building, Senedd, Cardiff

Historic building becomes a live voting chamber

The Grade 1 listed Pierhead Building stands on the waterfront of Cardiff Bay as one of the city’s most familiar landmarks, adjacent to the Senedd building and the Millennium Centre.

HKD was tasked with re-opening the building to the public. We needed to create a collection of purchased and replica objects to tell the story of the site and a give new purpose for the building.

HKD built on our experience of developing group interactives to turn the whole building into a site for voicing and sharing ideas. To support the commercial operation of the building a flexible infrastructure was put in place for events programming while a suite of exhibits invited visitors to join in with the debates being held next door in the Senedd. The building invited visitors to explore, create, respond with all displays flexible enough to accommodate commercial hire of the building when needed.
