Pie Days and Holidays

Pie Days and Holidays was a town-wide project that took place in 2011 and revolved around collecting and sharing food stories from residents and visitors to Margate.

The brainchild of artist Sophie Herxheimer and Kate Kneale of Marine Studios, this project saw Sophie listening to people’s stories and capturing their essence in ink drawings as each story was told. By running workshops in community halls, libraries, cafes, allotments and markets throughout the town, Sophie was able to gather 175 food stories during her four-month artist’s residency.

The project culminated in an exhibition, a feast (of all of the described foods), a limited edition book, and 45 meters of colourful hoardings of the drawings along Margate’s seafront that has stayed in place ever since.

The project was awarded funding from The Arts Council and English Heritage, through Margate Arts, Culture and Heritage.
