Playing with STEAM for the under 8s

Interactive environments for young children are much more than a series of educational exhibits. They are a combination of environment, play and social interactions that will not be experienced in a linear manner. Our design for the Children’s Discovery Center in the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum creates a series of exciting spaces that take the mind on a journey from the spectacular to the creative.

The more active role a visitor has in their own learning, the more impactful, memorable and enjoyable that learning is. Empowering visitors and giving them agency from their earliest visits to the museum will nurture a love of learning and discovery and establish the museum as playing a key role in that experience.

Adopting such an active and participatory role will benefit SSTM, strengthen staff skills and motivation, and maintain a lively dynamic gallery without unexpected budget demands.
