Case Study

Global creatives drawn together

Adventures In Comics

An annual 2-page comic competition, culminating in an exhibition.

Adventures in Comics was inspired by Richard’s love of drawing and his interest how stories can be communicated through sequential art.

What started as a passion project exploring what can be communicated with simple lines and their placement on a page, became a Marine Studios event that ran annually from 2014 to 2019.

Seeking to create connections between individuals and ideas, each year, a short phrase was selected as inspiration for a global community of artists and writers to take as a prompt for a two-page comic. Anyone could take part and send in their comic for inclusion in a competition and exhibition.

The event has involved talks and prize ceremony’s, bringing prominent comic publisher, Paul Gravett, to the studio as a co-curator of the exhibition and award ceremony, along with a range of up and coming names in graphic novels and design.

Featured exhibit:

Adventures in Comics 4: The Orb

Prompted by no more than the words The Orb, 2017’s Adventures in Comics event received 62 contributions from artists from across the UK and Europe, and as far afield as Malaysia and the USA
